04 Oct Shiplap, Slat Walls or Board and Batten? How to Choose an Accent Wall
An accent wall is one of the fastest ways to give a room character. Paint alone can do it, but wood trim takes it further: it adds texture, shadow and a custom look that is hard to get any other way. Here are the styles we are asked for most, and where each one works best.
Shiplap
Horizontal boards with a small gap between them. Shiplap is clean and relaxed, and it fits coastal homes especially well. It works on fireplace and TV walls, entries, laundry rooms and ceilings. Painted white it brightens a room; in a darker color it becomes the focal point.
Wood Slat Walls
Narrow vertical slats, usually in a natural wood tone. This is the most modern look of the group and it adds warmth to rooms with a lot of white. Slat walls work well behind a bed, behind a bar or in an entry, and the vertical lines make ceilings feel higher.
Board and Batten
Flat boards or trim strips arranged in a grid or in tall vertical panels. It is a classic look that suits dining rooms, hallways and bedrooms, and it can run the full height of the wall or only part of it.
Picture Frame Molding
Rectangles of trim applied to the wall and painted the same color as the wall. It is elegant without being loud, and it is a good choice for living rooms, primary bedrooms and formal entries.
Wainscoting
Paneling on the lower part of the wall, finished with a cap or chair rail. It protects walls in hallways and dining rooms and gives a home a finished, traditional feel.
How to Choose
- Match the style of the house. Slats suit modern homes; molding and wainscoting suit traditional ones; shiplap fits almost anywhere near the coast.
- Pick one wall with a reason. The wall behind the bed, the TV or the dining table is usually the right one.
- Think about color early. The same trim looks completely different in white, in a deep green or in natural wood.
- Mind the details. Outlets, switches, vents and baseboards all need to be planned so the pattern looks intentional.
Why the Finish Matters
With trim work, the difference between good and great is in the joints, the caulk lines and the paint. Gaps, visible nail holes and brush marks stand out on an accent wall because that is exactly where people look. Careful prep, filling, sanding and a smooth finish coat are what make it look built in.
